Did my friend w/benefits meet someone new or just want to end things w/me?

We had a great friends w/benefits situation for eight months, friendship included. He ended it abruptly by saying, "We can only strictly be friends. I want to change some things in my life." I saw a text from a girl in December & she called him something endearing. He ended our friends w/benefits situation in January. Do you think he wanted to end our friendship w/benefits because he met someone or was just tired of me? Believe me, he liked me, but for sex & friendship, not a relationship. He just contacted me again, FYI. If you respond, don't judge me harshly and call me bad names. Thanks.
