Advice on Elbow Pain?

My boyfriend had an accident about a year ago where his elbow had been broke he had to have surgery and screws put in his elbow.His elbow healed fine and has 100% use of it but now he complains about constant pain discomfort and numbness especially when were going to bed. He does nothing but toss and turn and the pain gets so bad sometimes that its excruciating for him. He doesn't want to take any pain killers for it. What else could he do to help his pain? any exercises or what he could stop doing maybe? it would be a greatly appreciated if I could get some advice?
