Why are we bombing Libya?

Gathafi relinquished power in 1977 and there are tribes fighting each other, some of which regard Gathafi as an iconic leader but nevertheless a person who doesn't control anything. So why does the media keep referring to the "Gathafi" regime when there really isnt any and why are we bombing 85% of the people? Are we killing them because they endear to Gathafi's philosophies or is there a train of thought that the West cannot comprehend that the country is governed by the people themselves and not elected officials? So we bomb them because we believe that its not possible for the people in a country to be governing themselves and instead fallaciously believe it must be under the rule of an autocratic dictator? Are we just going to keep bombing them for no reason. How many have we killed? I just don't get it.
