Why do love sick couples insist on calling each other mushy gushy pet names ?

Why can't you just call the person by their actual name. I hate that and my bf knows not to call me any corny or endearing names like " sweetie or sugar pie". To me Its like a dance of manipulation and I refuse to have somebody thinking they own me
