Why is being a self-serving woman a bad thing?

The word "self-serving" implies that you care nothing about the feelings of others. A self-serving person wouldn't make a good boss, co-worker, friend, or family member. People don't admire others that trample over people's feelings in order to get their own way. Maybe you should just describe yourself as a "go-getter," it sounds better.
